In February 1954, the new Mercedes-Benz 300 SL celebrated its world premiere in New York—marking the first time a new Mercedes model was unveiled abroad rather than in Germany. The public and the trade press were equally enthusiastic.
In the spring of 1957, the 300 SL Roadster replaced the legendary “Gullwing” and brought the joy of open-top driving to the high-performance sports car class. The newly developed rear-axle design was significantly superior to that of its predecessor and delivered noticeably improved handling characteristics.
This Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster was produced in 1959 under order number 97070580. Under this order number, the first owner ordered his Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster in the stunning color combination of graphite gray paint (DB 190) with red leather upholstery (1079).
According to the delivery note, the car was delivered on May 11, 1959, to the Mercedes-Benz importer in South Bend, USA. The delivery note lists the first owner as Mr. Bradley.
Over the course of its history, this exceptional Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster found its way back to Germany. The current German owner discovered the 300 SL Roadster in 2012 at the Retro Classics show in Stuttgart. It subsequently became part of his collection, where the vehicle remained for nearly 14 years.
After a thorough inspection, we determined that all major components are still original and match the vehicle’s serial number. Only the transmission was replaced with one from a later 300 SL Roadster.
