Following its debut in 1927, the Mercedes-Benz Type S became the most popular sports car of 1927 and 1928. The S, SS and SSK series left their mark on motorsport at home and abroad until 1933, and Rudolf Caracciola achieved worldwide fame in these cars.
Just under 300 cars were produced in this famous series: around 150 Type S, 110 Type SS and 35 Type SSK.
Dr Ferdinand Porsche was evidently particularly fond of the powerful supercharged racing cars, and they remained the most well-known result of his work at Daimler-Benz by far. The relatively small production run certainly brought no financial benefit to the company. However, their buyers were prominent figures from around the world, and this, along with the cars’ sporting and racing successes, was and remains of inestimable value to the brand’s international reputation.
This car was delivered to British Mercedes-Benz Ltd. in London, England, on 6 August 1928 as a ‘rolling chassis’.
Its chassis, engine, gearbox and rear axle are original 680 S and 710 SS components. This distinguishes this car from the numerous replicas, which cannot boast any contemporary technical components.
The car successfully competed in the Mille Miglia on numerous occasions.
