BMW 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile’

13.Mar 2026

The BMW 3.0 CSL “Batmobile” represents a defining chapter in BMW’s motorsport history. It was developed as a homologation model intended to transfer racing technology directly to the road and secure BMW’s competitiveness in international touring car racing during the 1970s. The first-series Batmobile is the earliest and purest expression of this concept and was produced in a strictly limited run of only 100 examples.

This particular vehicle was first registered on September 23, 1974, and clearly reflects the technical priorities of its era. Its distinctive aerodynamic components — including the large rear wing, front air dam, fins, and widened wheel arches — were not stylistic features but functional solutions derived directly from motorsport requirements. Every element served to improve stability, cooling, and high-speed performance.

A key development objective was weight reduction. Aluminium body panels, a simplified interior, and a strong focus on technical efficiency resulted in a significantly lower curb weight compared to the standard BMW 3.0 CS. Power comes from the 3,153 cc M30 inline six-cylinder engine with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection, producing up to 207 hp while combining durability with strong performance characteristics.

Today, a first-series BMW 3.0 CSL “Batmobile” is regarded as one of the most important road-going BMW models ever produced. Its close connection to factory motorsport, extremely limited production numbers, and unmistakable technical specifications make it one of the most sought-after homologation cars of its era.

This example represents an exceptionally rare, highly original, and extremely well-preserved specimen of the legendary BMW “Batmobile.”
