This early 300SL Gullwing left us yesterday. After decades in the last hand, this Mercedes is on its way to its new owner through our brokerage.
During the final test drive a week ago today there was a problem with the rear axle. A screw in the universal joint had come loose, found its way into the rear axle housing and penetrated the bottom of the housing.
Many smaller jobs were completed during the week and delivery was organized. Now a massive problem on the last working day before the workshop holidays. Our disappointment was great; it seemed hopeless that we would be able to meet the delivery date with the customer. Instead, there was a risk of a week-long delay.
Then we decided to give it a try. The workshop employees Martin and Matthias returned from vacation. It started on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Removing and dismantling the rear axle by 11:30 a.m. Meeting with our cardan shaft manufacturer on Saturday afternoon in Herford. He was willing to help us and started working for us straight away – despite having a full order book.
Everything had to go smoothly, there couldn’t be any further problems.
Full commitment on Tuesday and Wednesday (in the first week of vacation) from Jürgen and Sascha Kassen. Dinner was delivered to the workshop so as not to waste time and to replenish energy reserves.
We gave it our all and were lucky, everything worked out.
Final test drive yesterday morning and delivery yesterday evening.
