The Maybach SW38 is among the most elegant and technically sophisticated six-cylinder models produced in Germany during the late 1930s. Featuring a powerful inline six-cylinder engine, exceptional craftsmanship, and extensive possibilities for individual customization, the SW38 was aimed even then at a discerning and exclusive clientele. Only a small number of vehicles were built, and even fewer have survived the decades.
A significant contribution to this exclusivity came from the renowned coachbuilder Gläser of Dresden.
Gläser bodies were distinguished by their harmonious proportions, outstanding craftsmanship, and a certain lightness of design that continues to captivate today. Among collectors, Gläser’s coachwork is widely regarded as representing the most beautiful Maybach automobiles ever created.
Our vehicle is a Maybach SW38 Gläser Cabriolet, whose early history — according exclusively to the information recorded in the Maybach Register — is said to begin on March 25, 1938. According to the register, the car was delivered to Director Dr. Carlo Wetzell of Berlin. After the war, it is believed to have been used in Hamburg as an official vehicle for the Bread and Bakery Association.
As early as 1958, the register lists a new owner: an American from Atlanta. The cabriolet was later acquired by the film company Movie World in Buena Park, California, where it appeared numerous times as a prop in various U.S. television productions. Following the dissolution of the Movie World Museum, the Maybach passed to a car enthusiast in Guatemala, where it found a new home.
Around 15 years ago, the vehicle was acquired by our client and subsequently underwent an extensive restoration. Part of the work was carried out by the renowned restoration specialist Zinke in Zwönitz.
A rare and beautiful automobile with a fascinating history — partly documented and partly preserved through entries in the Maybach Register.
